Led go ob by dose
The huskies are back in session at NIU. I think there might even be a football game this weekend. So here are two huskie pups to celebrate the occasion.

dunk-n-fluff
My good friend has an online businness (Dunk-n-Fluff) specializing in handmade wool sets and custom children's clothing. All of her clothes are super cute, and so are her kids!
Anyway, before this is seen as a shameless plug for my friend's business, her husband is a graphic designer and illustrator and created a delightful logo for Dunk-N-Fluff worthy to be showcased on the Land of Cute. There is just something about cartoon sheep that tugs at my heartstrings. Normally I like to rip tags out of my clothing unceremoniously, but not Dunk-N-Fluff tags. I've actually considered sewing them on to every piece of clothing that I've ever owned. Maybe if things slow down here at work...

sew many bunnies, sew little time
Tonight my good friends are going to teach me how to sew. One picked up some super cute Japanese fabric here that I am going to try to steal and make into a purse while she is not looking. Wish me luck.

Wonderpets Unite!
Wonder Pets! is an exciting new Nick Jr. show for preschoolers. Each episode follows the adventures of three classroom pets--Linny the Guinea Pig, Ming-Ming Duckling, and Turtle Tuck--who travel around the globe helping to rescue animals who need their help.
Kudos to Maria, a loyal friend of "Land of Cute", for the inclusion of the somewhat surreal but undeniably cute "Wonderpets".

mrooow
This is Chococat. This is what Sanrio has to say about Chococat: "Although this little boy cat tends to be a little scatterbrained at times, he's always up on the latest news (thanks to his ultra-sensitive 'antenna' whiskers!). He gets his name from his chocolate-colored nose. He has fun playing around his house (the 'Choco-choco house') with his friends Cookie-bau, Nutz, Jellybean, and the Duckies." The best thing about Chococat? He shares a birthday with both of the Queens of the Land of Cute (May 10th- mark your calendars...)

I OTTER get back to work...
At the request of the lovely Zoe M., today is Otter Day! They are my favorite aquatic mammals. I'm very jealous of their eating habits- to survive some must eat 15% of their body weight every day (sea otters have to eat 20-25% of their body weight!). That means if I were like a sea otter, I'd have to eat 30-40 pounds of food a day! Mmmmm. (I guess that would get expensive though...) Most species of otters hunt for 3-5 hours a day; nursing mothers hunt for 8 hours. Check out the links section of Land of Cute- someone out there has created a Land of Cute otter-style. Enjoy!
Don't forget, we still have one more day of random week! Send in your submissions!

Frosty the Kitten
This was sent to me yesterday by my friend and former professor-
"Frosty is a 1 year old kitty that was severely frost-bitten when he was very little. On the pictures you can notice the blunt ears and the short tail. Frosty lives in a small room in a stable on a friend's farm. He is very friendly and sweet (and already neutered). And he needs a home!!!"
If anyone wants to help Frosty out, let me know! And don't forget to submit your favorite cute!

What can make a hippopotamus smile?
Being tiny, of course!
I met a pygmy hippopotamus at Lincoln Park Zoo the week before last and knew right away that I have to have one. They are at most 1/2 as tall as their regular-sized counterparts and weigh 1/4 as much. The third picture above is to give a sense of scale-that is a regular style hippo on the left and a pygmy on the right. Picture #2 is a mama and baby who currently reside at the Louisville Zoo. Picture #1 is from the London Zoo.
In case anyone is confused about what happened to Japanese Cute Day... I've taken over and made this Random Week. The rest of this week's cute I am going to leave up to our faithful cute-viewers out there... if you have any cuddly artifacts that you would like to see on here, please email them here. Thanks!!

a tad fennec-y
These little treasures are the smallest of the canidae family weighing in at most 3.3 pounds (remember, people, smallest almost always equals cutest). They can be found in the Sahara as well as in Arabia. Wikipedia gives them the understated description of having "distinctive oversized ears." They actually have the largest ears of the canidae family- which uses the cute principle of large ear-to-body ratio to its full potential. They are nocturnal and hunt rodents, insects, birds, bird eggs, and lizards such as sandfish. This tendency to eat other cute things is the only problem I can find with these creatures, but I can get over it.
Info from wikipedia (a really fascinating read, especially the part about chihuahuas)
This is apparently the site from which the photographs originated, but unfortunately the language barrier makes it difficult to navigate...

fox in eastern Asian landscape
(click on image to view it at a larger size)
So this fox may or may not have been originated by a Japanese artist (facts awaiting verification), but he is certainly cute-ing there now. The Google experience, thoroughly enjoyable to begin with, has now been made 1,000,000,000 times better. "Google" itself has become a verb, but this new iGoogle Fox 1.0 technology deserves its own. Fooxgle? Cutegle? Any suggestions?
Stay tuned for another contest... (hint: start stockpiling origami paper)
